Grounded Theory Coaching & Consulting (GtCC)
A working backwards approach to leadership and organizational growth
What is “grounded theory?”
Grounded theory is a type of qualitative research typically employed by social scientists to gather data and build theories for further exploration. According to Wikipedia “the methodology involves the construction of hypotheses and theories through the collecting and analysis of data. A study based on grounded theory is likely to begin with a question, or even just with the collection of qualitative data. As researchers review the data collected, ideas or concepts become apparent. These ideas/concepts are said to "emerge" from the data.”
How does grounded theory research relate to Grounded Theory Coaching & Consulting’s (GtCC) approach?
Like grounded theory research, at GtCC we believe that ideas and concepts about how to move forward emerge from the data and wisdom that already exist within individual leaders and organizations. Our job as coaches and consultants is to help unearth that data by listening deeply to what is said and not said, asking thoughtful questions, looking for patterns in thinking, challenging assumptions, and creating the space for reflection. We then work with what emerges to determine actions that move the individual or organization forward.
Individual Coaching
As in grounded theory research, leaders who work with a GtCC Coach often come to the engagement with a question or even just a collection of thoughts and feelings about where they are today, and where they want to go. Through exploration with their coach they uncover and clarify their vision along with the individual, iterative steps required to achieve it.
Organizational Growth Consulting
GtCC’s approach to consulting also mirrors the grounded theory research approach in that we believe in collaborating on solutions with those closest to the initiative or issue to see what emerges, and then determine bespoke, iterative concepts and ideas about how to move forward. We do not believe in applying standard, off-the-shelf products or frameworks before we discover the nuances of the organization’s current culture and context. Our consultants combine their expertise in organizational change, design, and leadership with what internal stakeholders know about the company culture and climate in order to create customized solutions.
The GtCC Development Model illustrates how we work with clients to achieve iterative, bespoke, long-lasting impact for individuals and organizations. The theoretical and research basis for this model can be found on the Course Work tab.
